This commemorative stamp was issued in 1961 to honor ten years of Israel Bonds. In 1951 Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion established the Israel Bonds Organization to raise funds for the development of the country. Revenue from the funds are used in the Development Budgets. In its first ten years the State of Israel Bonds brought in over $500 million, $425 million of which came from the United States alone. On average, Bond revenues constituted about one-third of the Development Budget in 1961. The first bonds were redeemed in 1963. Since its founding, State of Israel Bonds have brought in over $13 billion.
